This weekend Mom, Doug, Alex, Joe and I went to Fulshear to eat BBQ at Dozier's (it's not as good now that they have cleaned up the place) and go to the "Funny Farm" aka "the country." In the late 1970s/early 1980s my parents bought about 80 acres in Fulshear, Texas and built a house and 2 lakes on the property. We used to load up the Suburban and go "to the country" on the weekends. We would eat greasy BBQ at Dozier's, ride go-karts, have parties and fish and swim in the lake. I had my 14th birthday party there. Polly spent the night with Andrew in the treehouse my dad had built on the island in the center of the lakes. At the beginning when there was nothing but brush and trees, my dad would tell us "One day this place is going to look like a park." We'd nod and think "yeah, right!" I'm not sure it ever looked like a park but my dad and grandfather spent a lot of time on the tractor clearing the land and singeing their eyebrows while burning the brush in bonfires. I remember the Easter that the raccoons (or some other animal/s) opened all the eggs we set out for Andrew to find so there was no candy in the eggs when we went downstairs Easter morning. My dad would grill briskets on what seemed like a huge grill and it always tasted so good. I clearly recall one July 4th weekend. We were on our way home from the holiday weekend and it was before the road to the house was paved. It had rained a ton and the road was really muddy. Surprise, surprise! The car got stuck and we had to walk back to the house until my dad could get the car out of the mud. I was hot, muddy and miserable! The boys and I regularly had friends come out with us and it was so much more fun when they did. Apparently during high school, Alex's weekend parties at the country were legendary (and it was only recently that my mom heard about these parties). My dad loved the country. My mom hated the country. My brothers loved the country. I was bored at the country. But now, my memories of our family weekends at the country are fond. Each time I think of Fulshear and the country, I think of my sweet daddy and how much joy he got being outdoors and getting out of the city. It was fun to go back this weekend and reminisce.
